Schedule H, H1 and X drugs: a quick guide for pharmacists and pharmacy staff
What Schedule H, H1 and X mean on a medicine pack, what each needs before you dispense, the H1 register, and how to handle these orders when selling online.

Quick answer
Schedule H medicines need a valid prescription and carry an Rx mark. Schedule H1 medicines, such as certain antibiotics, anti-TB and habit-forming drugs, also need an entry in a separate register with the prescriber, patient, medicine and quantity, kept for three years. Schedule X medicines are narcotic and psychotropic drugs with the strictest prescription, storage and record rules.
Every new counter assistant asks the same thing in their first week: “What’s the difference between H and H1?” Here is a plain refresher you can share with your team. Always check the current Drugs and Cosmetics Rules and your State Drugs Control Department for the exact requirements.
Schedule H
- Prescription-only medicines. The label carries Rx and a warning that it should be sold only on a registered medical practitioner’s prescription.
- Dispense only against a valid prescription, in the quantity prescribed.
Schedule H1
- Introduced to curb misuse of certain antibiotics, anti-TB medicines and habit-forming drugs.
- The label carries Rx in red with a boxed warning.
- Record each sale in a separate H1 register: prescriber’s name and address, patient’s name and address, medicine name and quantity.
- Keep the register for three years, available for inspection.
Schedule X
- Narcotic and psychotropic medicines with the strictest controls.
- Requires a specific licence, secure storage, a prescription retained by the pharmacy, and detailed records.
- Because of these controls, many pharmacies choose not to offer Schedule X medicines for delivery at all.
Selling online? The same rules apply
An online order is still a sale under your licence. Your pharmacist must see and verify the prescription before dispensing H and H1 medicines, and H1 entries still go in the register. The MedMate Partner console keeps a prescription queue so uploaded prescriptions and doctor-issued e-prescriptions are checked before packing.
